The Beginnings

Pamoja Zanzibar was registered under the laws of Zanzibar as a local non-government-organization on the 23rd of July 2008. Our board of directors includes both representatives from the local and ex-pat community as we work together towards our vision and goals. Our Chairman is Yussuf Suleiman Khalfan. Hans-Dieter Allgaier from Germany was appointed as Pamoja's first Managing Director.

The ground breaking ceremony for the training centre and workshop in Chukwani was held on 24th of January 2009. Many local leaders attended and showed their support for Pamoja Zanzibar. Construction then started on the 1st of February, 2009. The construction was generously supported by Partner Aid Germany. The German Embassy Tanzania equipped our computer room with state-of-the-art computers.

On January 6th, 2011 Pamoja Zanzibar was officially opened by the Minister of State, Office of Vice President, Samia Suluhu Hassan (now Vice President of Tanzania), and the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Guido Herz. Many honored people from Zanzibar and Tanzania joined us in the grand opening ceremony. From there on, trainings in car mechanics, English and computers were offered to Zanzibaris, as well as garage services to our customers.

Expansion

To serve the raising demands for healthy drinking water in Zanzibar, a partnership with Mörk Water Solutions was established in 2012 to install and maintain water desalination units across Zanzibar. The proceeds from the desalination department are a indispensable contribution to keep our educational programs running in a self-sustaining way.

The Pemba branch of Pamoja Zanzibar was started and established in 2013. It began as an Adult Education Center in the small town of Konde. It started with English and Computer Education, but has since expanded to include Teacher Trainings, Microfinance Loan Projects, and varying degrees of Health Education.

In 2015 the Pamoja Sewing School was opened. Pamoja now offers a 2-year vocational training in tailoring and sewing, and thus empowering our students to take care of themselves and their families by working as professional tailors.
